I didn’t see this topic hence posting it on behalf of many of my physician colleagues.
I share the same frustration as many of my colleagues. When I work on my iPhone or write an email on gmail things just flow smoothly. On the other hand when I log into my EHR, things are choppy, confusing and just not the way most of us think they should be. Don’t get me wrong, I do think current EHR are way better than legacy paper charts and systems like CPRS, yet they seem to lag far behind the technology in contemporaries such as productivity software and banking. I have used a number of major systems such as Epic, cerner, patientkeeper, centricity, CPRS and paper chart as well.
Like every other software users my
colleagues have different proficiencies. Some are very tech savvy (e.g. can write basic software) to those who are minimally tech savvy (e.g. type with one finger all CAP locks and prefer paper chart at every possible opportunity). Both these groups can be on top of their clinical skills yet when it comes to productivity struggle in different ways. The first group says that EHR slows them down because it’s designed for basic users while the second group feels EHR slows them as it gets too overwhelming.
No EHR to my knowledge adjusts to this. Most of the EHR satisfy meaningful use and the typical checkboxes, yet the art of making it perfect like apples and googles do is missing. I want more e.g. having AI and note automation from peripherals yet I feel in this age we are still struggling with the basics.
Food for thought from the frontline.
