Updated Diabetes Prevention Recognition Program (DPRP) Standards: Virtual Delivery Mode

Prediabetes and diabetes rates have grown at an alarming pace. In 2017 USA an estimated 86 million individuals (1 in 3) were diagnosed with prediabetes and another 29.1 million (1 in 11) with diabetes. Individuals with prediabetes, the clinical precursor to diabetes, are estimated to convert to type 2 diabetes at a rate of 5%–10% per year. Such conversion rates, however, with early intervention through lifestyle modification, are substantially reduced. Intervention programs aimed towards persons at risk of developing type 2 diabetes have shown remarkable success.

The Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) clinical trial demonstrated a 58% reduction in diabetes risk through lifestyle modification. DPP programs (DPPs) have predominately been delivered in-person, but digital DPPs have emerged as a scalable method to reach larger numbers of at-risk individuals. Additionally, studies have shown remarkable success for digital delivery of DPPs, at times even reporting superior outcomes over their in-person counterparts. This comes as especially good news for at-risk individuals in remote areas where in-person programs may not be readily available or at all.

It is important to note, however, that studies are carried out by competent organizations capable of effectively delivering a prevention program. Thus, one has to ask, "how does a person at risk of developing diabetes choose a quality DPP?" How can an at-risk person make an informed decision? The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has the answer in its establishment of the CDC Diabetes Prevention Recognition Program (DPRP). The purpose of the DPRP is to recognize organizations that have demonstrated their ability to effectively deliver a proven type 2 diabetes prevention lifestyle change program. An organization can apply for CDC recognition whether the program is delivered in-person, digitally, or through a combination of the two.

By providing standardized reporting on performance of DPPs, the DPRP assures the quality of recognized organizations. With accurate, reliable, and trustworthy information individuals are able to make informed decisions to improve their health, and through the reach of digital delivery of prevention programs more individuals will be able to take advantage of recognized, effective programming.
